Deeply Rooted
Northern Romania
In Northern Romania, the valleys and rolling hillsides that form the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains have been shaped and maintained for centuries by generations of family farmers and herders. It's a place where much of the work is still done without machinery, just as it was during medieval times. This is a culture rooted in an intimate knowledge of the environment - one that helps maintain biodiversity and enhances sustainable food security. Despite ever changing environmental, political, and climatic conditions, many of these farmers and herders have been able to maintain a degree of self-sufficiency and cultural autonomy. Yet, for better or worse, this traditional way of life is on the cusp of change.
